Difference Between Stainless Steel and Mild Steel

Steel is one of the most common types of metal found in the world. The steel industry has been growing immensely over the years which in turn shows that the usage of steel in every industry, as well as the household sector, is increasing.  Its quality and durability make it the most admired material to manufacture and fabricate several items.

There are several grades of steel that are widely used upon the requirements of the individual product’s characteristics and qualities.

Every category differs in its strength, durability, luster, and cost depending upon the manufacturing process and usage. Two common categories are ss press fittings and mild steel

Stainless Steel-

Stainless steel, which is made of a chromium alloy, is distinguished by its ability to resist rust and corrosion. Iron, which comprises most steel, rusts very easily. Plumbing materials made from stainless steel are extremely popular appliances.

Mild Steel - As its name suggests, carbon steel is sometimes called 'mild steel' or 'Carbon steel’ has no more than 2 % carbon content and no other appreciable alloying element.  It is the most widely used steel type and a major component of the steel industry.

Difference between mild and Stainless Steel-

Corrosion resistance- stainless steel plumbing fittings has a layer of chromium layer that prevents it from rust and corrosion in a moisture environment. It also prevents heat. On the other hand, mild or carbon steel is not very effective against corrosion, over time it’ll lose its properties and start getting rust.  It also does not provide protection against heat.

Durability- Mild steel corrodes in some time and needs repair or management over some time due to which it does not lasts over a long period of time. However, Stainless Steel has a good long-lasting ability and is one of the major reasons why it is preferred.

Appearance- Stainless steels are generally easy to clean as they don’t stain in comparison to mild steel. Mild steel cannot be cleaned very often and require a lot of effort in order to take care of.

Maintenance- Stainless installation is super easy and once installed it requires rarely any maintenance it’s strength and non-corrosive nature make it suitable for every sector.

There is a great deal of need for steel in the construction industry and many other areas as well. Steels can be divided into two types based on their composition: mild steel and stainless steel. In general, mild steel is characterized by its presence of iron and carbon, while stainless steel is characterized by the presence of iron and chromium.
