Did you know Rhinox Stainless steel can rust?
In normal environments, stainless steel pipe fittings are more corrosion resistant than other metals and alloys. A thin layer of chromium oxide forms when stainless steel is exposed to oxygen. Abrasion, cleaning solvents, chlorides, high humidity, high salinity environments, and/or high humidity can damage this layer, leading to corrosion.
Stainless steel often rusts for the following reasons:
Cleaning inadequately:
Not removing the dirt or not thoroughly rinsing and drying the stainless steel tube fittings after cleaning, might allow the iron in water to react with the oxygen in the air, resulting in rust.
Using steel wool or a wire brush to clean stainless steel:
When stainless steel fittings are cleaned using this method, particles become embedded in the surface. Moisture and humidity can cause these particles to rust.
Chemical cleaning products:
Rust is sometimes caused by by-products other than those
directly applied to stainless steel. Chemical cleaners used for concrete or to
clean windows, for example, can contaminate stainless steel by reacting with
the air and leaving rust deposits.
Maintaining Stainless Steel and
Preventing Rust:
Since stainless steel
plumbing has
a chromium oxide layer, it can self-heal, but regular maintenance is required.
Using mild soap/detergent and warm water is all that is necessary for everyday
cleaning. Dry the surface thoroughly after washing with fresh water and rinsing
with a clean cloth. If the products need to be refinished, they can also be
cleaned with a specialty kit.
Here
are a few tips that may help you avoid this in the future:
· Different types of finishing can be used. Choosing the right
finish can be tricky if you do not have a professional's advice.
· Stainless steel that is higher in grade should be used in harsh
environments.
· Keep the original plastic film on the product during
construction or remodeling or use something similar until the project is
finished.
